Jonathan met Erica shortly after crashing his rental into her boyfriend's car in southern Vermont in June of 2001. After exchanging pleasantries and assessing the damage, the two spent the entire summer at a music festival, spending all their free time together and loving every moment. After leaving Vermont, their contact sadly dwindled to a minimum and each knew only as much about the other as a Google search would permit. Erica dedicated herself to alternately creating and slicing up mouse brains in St. Louis and Jonathan continued to try to play the viola in Austria.
Until one day in 2006, when Erica kicked back a few margaritas, called Jonathan in the middle of the night, started crying and said that she loved him. He replied that she was the love of his life; after exchanging further pleasantries and assessing the damage, they wondered what to do. After endless hours on the phone and innumerable text messages, they decided it was time to meet again in Santa Fe. Terrified, Jonathan repaired immediately to a beauty spa in Bogotá, Columbia, where he was given dubious treatments and salves. Needing to look his best for the occasion, he went out and bought himself some new clothes and showed up dressed like Mr. Rogers. Erica packed a suitcase full of shoes and as many changes of outfit as there are hours in a day, and in the event showed up dressed like Daisy Duke. My God she’s beautiful he thought; boy, I bet he’d look great with a purse, thought she.
Bliss. They immediately swore not to mess things up this time around, and to make sure, Jonathan introduced her to his mother the next morning. Slowly they got to know each other and found to their delight how much they enjoyed actually being together. Erica taught him to tie his shoes and blow his nose correctly and Jonathan discovered that she suffered from severe memory lapses, which allowed him to repeat the same dumb jokes and old stories over and over again, each time received anew. There followed a time of air miles and phone bills as Jonathan slowly lured her to Europe, plying her with fine Spanish wines and beach vacations on the Mediterranean. Having returned to the cello and armed with a grant to study in Paris, Erica was finally living in the Continental time zone, and, to celebrate, Jonathan picked out a ring. Early one morning, he proposed - too stunned to think straight, she said yes, and they opened bottle after bottle of champagne with their families.
Thus began in earnest the wedding planning and dancing lessons for the hapless groom. After discarding various dubious ideas of when and where to get married, they decided on the Hay-Adams in Washington, D.C. on the 20th of December, 2008, after which they will live happily ever after.
